COVER STORY | CERTIFICATION

New Weapon in the Arsenal

Certifications have emerged as gate passes to markets domestic and overseas, but their appreciation remains a challenge

When Bureau ofIndian Standards was constructing a new office building in Chennai way back in the 80s, local specialistK-Lite bid to supply indoor and outdoor light fittings and ballasts. It was the only one among the bidders to have obtained the ISI certification for its products, which at that time was not mandatory. Little did the company know that its ahead-of-time quest for certification would prove costly. It lost out due to higher prices to parties who had not volunteered for the quality mark yet.
