Marching into Limelight  

India’s leading LED exposition drew more crowds of buyers and more international players than ever before

The fifth edition of LED Expo concluded after three days of excitement and heightened business activity at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi recently. The show, that has been growing each year, saw a tremendous increase in the number of exhibitors as well as visitors when compared to previous years.

“We are very excited to see the huge response for this show. The show, which began with around 30 exhibitors in the first year, has grown to this size in a span of just four years,” informed a visibly elated Himani Gulati (himani@themediaexpo.com) of the organising company Media Exposition & Events. “The statistics are speaking that the show has grown immensely over the past few years. This year there were 230 exhibitors, 20% more when compared to the last year. The number of visitors also went up to nearly 20,000, which is much higher than earlier.”

Gulati added that the total floor area of the event was 1,00,000 sft. “Following the success of the previous editions, there has been a significant increase in participation by the international exhibitors. We had country pavilions from Taiwan, which was supported by TAITRA; the Japan LED alliance, and China.” She added that international exhibitors had informed they received more business inquiries than expected, and most of them said they hoped to convert around 70% of them into actual business.

“LEDs are being looked upon as the new generation lighting source. No wonder our show has seen huge participation from both domestic and international companies,” Gulati explained while speaking about the success. This statement was proved by the fact that most leading names from the LED industry were present, including Philips Lumileds, Nihon Garter, Cree, Nichia, Everlight, Createled, Epistar, VIN, Tridonic, Khatod, Shenzhen Light Power, Prolight, Regnant, Edison, Amka, Seoul Semiconductors, Moser Baer, Toshiba, Insta Power, and CLD Electronics.

Agreed Rajeev Bansal, a consultant and supplier of LED products, “This show has been extremely successful and will continue to be so till the time relevant visitors come here. Most of the domestic and international companies have displayed here, and this shows that the country is waking up to energy-efficient lighting.”

Nick Hsu, international specialist – marketing & business development at Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association in Taiwan, acknowledged that shows such as LED Expo are the right place to explore business opportunities. “This show looks very promising as I see a lot of people taking keen interest in the Taiwan pavilion. This will surely bring more business for companies from Taiwan.”

Agreed Ivan Tsoi, senior marketing manager Asia Pacific for Philips Lumileds, which displayed its latest product Luxeon A and S. “This show is a perfect platform to showcase the latest advancements of the industry.”

Pranav Mohta, business manager CLD Electronics & Telecom observed, “LED Expo can be termed as a place where we look forward to making alliances with LED manufacturers. We have received a good response here, and hope to convert most of the inquiries into serious business.”

Concurrent to the expo, a two-day LED Summit on products and technology was also organised. This conference enlisted eminent speakers from various organisations and government agencies including the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Ministry of Power, TERI and ONGC. The main topics discussed during the summit included LED markets in India, global perspective in LEDs, drivers and controls, measurement and standards, design, packaging and latest innovations in LEDs, LED optics, thermal management, solar and LED applications, and career and skill development opportunities in LEDs.

Another highlight of the show was the live demo rooms showcasing various applications of LEDs with mock-ups for retail store lighting, office lighting, signage lighting, outdoor lighting and hotel guest room lighting. The next edition of LED Expo will be held in Mumbai during 3rd to 5th February 2012, and it will return to New Delhi during 14th to 16th December 2012.
