The Design Factor

Emphasis on design ruled this year’s Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition 

The 5th Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition, held during the Autumn edition of Hong Kong International Lighting Fair, accepted entries in open and student categories. A panel of seven judges from the design fraternity of Hong Kong judged the competition. Winning entries of both groups were showcased at the show venue.
 

Open Group Winners

1. Aura by NOOVO Limited. The first prize winning entry, Aura is a series of LED-powered, stainless steel cluster-able lamps suitable for both domestic and project use. The hidden light source and joint structure of Aura makes it simple yet elegant. Made from polished stainless steel, this luminaire draws attention with its aesthetic appearance and innovative design. The flexible combination of different units enables the user to use Aura as a single unit in domestic setting or as a stunning light installation in large-scale projects.

 

2. Night Buddy by Yeung Ki Cheong. This luminaire has been designed to encounter the night fear of small children. It is so designed that when hugged, Night Buddy provides a certain amount of light to comfort the child. The auto dimming timer of Night Buddy helps children fall asleep again easily.

 

 

 

3. Aurora by Wong Wai Hon. A dazzling natural light, Aurora has a wonderful lighting effect that demonstrates the beauty of nature. This luminaire is made of mist makers, small fans and a series of LEDs to create the lighting effect of the real Aurora. The moisture and ions that are released by the mist makers help in keeping the air fresh and moist. 

 


 

Student Group Winners

1. Timeless by Chow Kin Leung. Shaped like a normal hour glass, this luminaire reminds one of the age old method of calculating time and has been named accordingly. The luminous powder in Timeless releases soft light to help users sleep comfortably. This luminaire is also credited for energy saving.

 

 

2. Funni by Cheung Wui Hei. Embellished with bright-coloured magic tapes, Funni is suited to be put along with simple and plain furniture. Users can mix and match any combination to create a personalised Funni with their favourite colours, to go with their festivals and cultures. The magic tape used in this luminaire has two sides and has a hook and loop effect.

 

 

3. Stone by Tse Yan Lam. With gentle light, the round shape and a polished surface, Stone is a lighting tool that has the potential to become the focus of the house. This luminaire helps guard valuable items like a key, a watch or an octopus card, and can also be used to decorate a corner.
 

 

 Eco Design Award Winner

Planting Light by Sun Luen Electrical Mfg Co Ltd. Planting light has been thoughtfully designed to connect the indoor area with nature. With the use of energy-saving LED bulbs, tropical plants like cactus can be grown in the specially designed glass lamp shade. These LED bulbs are not only used for lighting, but also help in making the plants grow. Even when switched off, the plants can bring the outdoors in and add an element of nature to the indoor area.
