Texas Instruments Launches ICs for LED Lighting
US-based Texas Instruments Inc (TI), the global semiconductor giant, has recently introduced its newly developed integrated chip (IC) for LED lighting products. Says Abhishek Kumar (abhishek.kumar@ti.com), the company’s business development manager for power management, “We are eyeing the growing demand for chips for everything from toasters, cars, and LED lights in the domestic market. Our TPS 92070 is the latest innovation in the LED lighting segment, and marks the beginning of an era of value-for-money LED lighting products.”
Kumar explains that the chip is the heart of the driver, which determines the lumen output and lifespan of a LED light. “The TPS 92070 IC will help in downsizing the drivers, as they will have integrated features like dimming. Our ICs will give higher lumen output and prolonged service life. This innovation will impact the country’s LED lighting turf, as they will reduce the cost of lighting products, thereby causing massive penetration of LEDs in the country.”
The Dallas headquartered corporation was the first global technology company to set foot in India in 1985, with its R&D facility in Bengaluru for global design activities. In 2006, it increased its focus on the country’s semiconductor market in a big way. Kumar says, “Our Indian R&D centre developed the industry’s first single chip solution, the LoCosto, for wireless handsets. Unveiling the TPS 92070 ICs is yet another defining moment. We are geared up to supply them to our clients. GreenStar has used our ICs in their just-launched Galaxy series of outdoor and street lighting, and is doing brisk business in many markets including India.”
Kumar adds that TI’s support network is primarily targeting SMEs. “We have strategically located our R&D and sales and marketing offices in 12 cities of the country where large number of SMEs are present. We believe that they will bring the wave of LED in India, and we want to be a part of that by making our innovation accessible to them.”
TI also launched ‘The LED Lighting Reference Design Cookbook’ in September last year, to help manufacturers in solving their lighting design needs. “LED lighting designers are always challenged in meeting efficiency and reliability goals. This reference board is a boon to those customers who seek the latest in innovative and affordable LED-based lighting solutions for AC/DC, DC/DC, LED drivers, power management devices, wireless and wired interface control, and embedded processors.”
